Spun both timing side cam bushes. I cannot for the life of me remember if I redid them 2 years ago. But either way, to quote Dale Earnhardt "that's just hard racin'." Good arguement for rebuilding your race motor every couple years whenther it "needs" it or not.

Looks like 11.5 to one or maybe even 12 to one compression. I picked up 4 miles an hours last year on one compression point. These are one over last year. Cross fingers. These are 60 years old and have to be ground in the old time way to fit. Crazy stuff. Thanks Gordon. .

Decided to go with a Chevrolet smog pump. This has been tried successfully on go karts and a 50cc Honda road racer I found. On the Honda 50 it was under driven quite a bit so on my 200 (stock displacement this year) I'm going to try 25% over and see what happens. I will have other blower pulleys to overdrive it more if needed. If it will show just a few pounds of boost I think that would make a noticeable difference. Stay tuned.....................

I finally got my engine out and apart after Bonneville. It's dead. Diagnosis......broken crankshaft. Crank pin let go right through oil passage. At the time I thought maybe just the bearing on the drive side of the crank let go because engine was still running. Bearing was OK. Timing side flywheel was being forced to turn, opening valves and turning distributor. Rod still moves freely on broken pin. I also lost a circlip and the wrist pin was up against cylinder. Sleeve job had a short life. Bottom end was together for three years, held together for lots of runs. Bike ran great and went faster than ever before. Set a record. Gave it's all. Very proud of machine. Now I just have to fix it.

Heres another cool article from 1969 Hot Rod. Check the contraptions. Looks like what BUB brings out nowadays. Where are all the bikes like these during Speed Week? All you racers with vintage bikes, bring them out to the REAL speed week. We are a minority there. Dont be content with running as an also ran behind a guy on a scooter. This was one nice Norton, notice that it is sitting on a mobile dyno. These guys brought it out to help tune their bike without having to do some runs to figure out jetting. They ended up giving up when the werent running 160mph or something-the guy remarked "Lets go back to the dirt (EL Mirage) where it's easy". We put Wes' bike on that dyno as well, it sure was cool seeing his old ass bike on something technical like a compuetrized mobile dyno in the middle of the pits at Bonneville.

We took the carburetor off this bike at 5:30am by flashlight when no one was on the salt yet. Had it on Wes' bike while waiting in the staging lanes- carb cleaner is cold on your hands that early in the morning!! It sure was cool cannibalizing a nice art bike to get a vintage racer to run on the salt...Thank you Kimura-san

Its amazing how the safety regulations have changed over the years. I guess they have to change with the bikes themselves, it still amazes me to see how crazy some of this guys were. From Rollie Free to this guy wearing chucks on the drag strip, to modern day top fueler harley guys wearing kevlar vests, I guess its a sign of the times.

Knucklehead powered streamlined roadster I believe..If you look close you can see what looks like a quick change, and the drive chain runs right into the ring gear which I assume had a sprocket welded or bolted on. Linkert carb, moon tank, butterfly dragster type wheel, push start simplicity!! This is hot rodding!!

Triumph Twin Drag Ruler

This is a pic of Boris Murray and his twin engined 750 Triumph running at Lions. Boris was the pilot of both Manning streamliners that are shown on the blog at little earlier in the month.
It consistently ran over 170 mph in the 8-second zone with two carbureted Triumph fuel motors, high gear only, with a 4 inch wide M&H racing slick.He raced, and beat, the likes of Joe Smith, Ray Price, Sonny Routt, Bonny Truitt, Leo Payne, Dave Campos, Russ Collins, etc.

The man behing the ez-hook kawasaki streamliner!!! Humble beginings for sure....from 98mph in this contraption to 350mph in the other contraption.
Here is an excerpt from motorcycleusa explaining the details of Sam Wheelers first streamliner---
His first machine, the Electoral Conduit Special as Sam referred to it, utilized a Bultaco 125cc engine which went 95 mph in 1963. This early streamliner was shaped like a bullet and as the name implies, utilized lightweight conduit tubing as the material of choice throughout the chassis. Sparing no expense, Sam purchased the tapered nose cone and a spare from a surplus store for two dollars. This fiberglass cone was merely protective covering for a metal nose cone and was a throwaway item. A sheet metal “skin” surrounded the tubular chassis encapsulating the driver and his controls, minimizing aerodynamic drag.

After breaking my ankle pretty severly a couple weeks ago, I realized how hard it was to get around on crutches and how downright boring it is laying around waiting for the healing process to begin. I've never broken a bone before so its new territory for me, and I have newfound respect for people who have to deal with it everyday of their lives. Here is a pic of double amputee Carig Anderson "Peg Leg Craig". He lost both legs above the knee in a "work related accident" but that dosent stop him from flying down the salt in his record holding streamlined sidecar rig. He holds the AMA record at 168.333mph and his best one way average is 177mph. Handicapped?? I think not!!!!

Good looking bike, from what research I found, theyre running 12.5:1 compression, Kibblewhite valves, Amal Gp carb, and a nx nitrous kit. 500cc single thumper that probably sounds pretty killer on the bottle- Its definately bitchin to see different stuff like this at the lakes, even if it is at the Bub event.....

This is the same streamliner as shown below, but with an updated shell and twin 800 Nortons. Norton/Harley tranny was supposedly used, and they ran upwards 90% nitro. Explosion problems and high speed wobbles sidelined this awesome liner... Beautiful
Not enough can be said for Denis Manning and his commitment to running faster in a streamined motorcycle than anyone could have ever imagined!!

This was built by/for Denis Manning--the guy behind "The worlds fastest motorcycle" and the BUB in BUB speed trials. Built after the Rayborn Harley streamliner as seen in On Any Sunday. Twin 750 triumphs and I believe a harley tranny. Set a one way record of 274mph in 1972... Beautiful!!!

A good time was had at ElMirage. With my bike broken I crewed for Dale Martin. He was running his 175cc Cub in partial streamlining. Same fairing I got. Went 79 on a 77mph min. open record.Very windy day, he feels that combo should do about 90. Congrats Dale! Thats one more record in the book. I cracked my cylinder sleeve up at the top. Back to the drawing board, will get it fixed and try for next month. I snoozed and didn't get a shot of Dale but later did snap this 650 Triumph waiting in line. That scoop is for his ram air set up. The box in the tail he runs his breather into with a one way valve. Air can leave the crankcase but not go back in. Supposed to help. I also run a one way check valve in my beather. Said bike has gone 121 mph "on his own dry lake" I'm not sure what that means. Still fast.

What does a mother of two teenage daughters do instead of fighting about clothes, unsuitable boyfriends and school, she puts them on motorcycles and teaches them how to break Bonneville National Land Speed Records.

Laura Klock is the speed mom who set another new record of 153.9 mph on her custon HD cruiser which is know as the “World’s Fastest Bagger”. Daughters Erika,18, and Karlee,14, both had impressive runs of their own, posting new records of 132 mph and 110 mph respectively.

This mother/daughter/daughter trio was the first in history to hold Bonneville National Land Speed Records in the same year. Making it even more impressive is the fact that Karlee just received her driver’s license in her home state of South Dakota.
All class records are determined by bike size not the riders’ gender. Laura and Erica Klock were previously acknowledged as the first mother and daughter riders to set national land speed records and have now added younger daughter Karlee to that record.

I like this bike. Goes 130 mph+ with 3 cubic inches. I should make a streamliner my next machine. My friend Dale Martin, long time Cub racer, thinks 175 mph could be possible in a Cub powered streamliner. In 1959 Dale and his dad had one way speeds of 150+ in such a machine. Good stuff !!!

Fairing is half way mounted. Head and barrel need to come off now. Head gasket still leaking, going to try a new idea this time and run it without a head gasket. Barrel will be shimmed up from case to get valve clearance. No fairing for May El Mirage but should be on there for June. After fairing is on I still need to set up the remote starter and make a new stand. It's all slowly coming together.

From Swingarm to Rigid

Wes hooked me up with a rigid pre-unit tranny for the lakes bike, and after some loose mock-up we were'nt satisfied with the mounts. The rigid top mount is prone to breaking and I didnt want it to come apart at 400mph hehe--so I was gonna add another bung to strengthen it up. We pulled out a swingarm case and after inspection it was the way to go. It has a serious mount on the bottom and top so it would hold together with my speedy shifting. He pulled out some swingarm plates and after some massaging we had a swingarm tranny in a rigid frame.I am going to make the plates out of aluminum for "race" sake- and Im toying with the idea of making front/rear one piece. Heres a pic, stay tuned

I always love the little stuff that comes along with have a TRUE racing motorcycle. Clip-ons, Special Fuel, Race tires, etc. Another special thing are the cool race stands that hold your bike in the "stinkbug" position. Functional is the key- Wes has a killer one for his desert sled, which I believe is made by MCM. I am making one similar to the ones used on crotch rockets- Moto GP style stuff. I hope my orange flake skate wheels wont dig into the salt.... Heres what Im leaning towards

Here is an rendering of the Summers Bros GOLDENROD. 400 plus mph-32 feet long-4 inline injected hemi's. Built in the early 50's it raced until the early-mid 80's Long time fastest wheel driven record holder. It looked different than in this rendering but I think this looks more swoopy..It was GOLD!!
